What is surrealism?

Screen Shot 2013-05-09 at 14.03.44Surrealism is a ‘cultural movement’ (quote from Wikipedia). It began in the early 1920’s and as far as i know, it is best known for its painterly art work and writing. The purpose of surrealism was to ‘resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality.’ Most artists often create a strange piece of art work from everyday objects and what’s interesting is that the painting has way of expressing itself. Surrealism is a shallow box of the human supernaturally mind.

Definition of Surrelism from popsubculture.com (http://www.popsubculture.com/pop/bio_project/surrealism.html)

a style of art and literature developed principally in the 20th century, stressing the subconscious or non-rational significance of imagery arrived at by automatism or the exploitation of chance effects, unexpected juxtapositions, etc.

Another quote about surrealism from Antonin Artaud.
Surrealism is not a style. It is the cry of a mind turning back on itself.
